Today, Saturday March 12th, 2011 Day de Dada artists meet for “Dada a Gogo” a mobile, virtual venue for Second Saturday Staten Island. We are visiting Art at Bay, Atelier Mertz, Open Art Surgery, The Assembly Room, Deep Tanks, Small, Love and 33 Cent. The question we are asking: “What do you see?”

Lumen Art Off at Art at Bay 5-6pm “What do you see?”

ooo yeah, naked women and empty space, wires, white walls, black and white collage and in the back room some industrial paintings that I like. I see a friendly atmosphere.

Art, I like what I’m looking at now. I like the use of pencil or charcoal. I like the depiction of the human form. This all new to me.

I see amazing paintings. Industrial scenes, buildings, dust coated, water tanks, images of towers, water towers smoke stacks, furnaces that used to burn steel in Bethlehem Steel. All oil, very colorful, bright colors, shading , some fine lines, detail in some, very reminiscent of Charles Demuth and Charles Scheeler of the Percisionist Movement.

I see a seaside art venue, packed with Chili Chompers.

There is a great fixin’s bar for the chili, extremely impressive. 3 D people and 2 D People.

Assembly Room 6:30 to 7:30 pm “What do you see?”

Music, set up, equipment, stuffed animals laying dead on the floor, spattered art framed in gold with red strigs/liflines connecting them. I see silver glitter belts, layers of houndstooth, tall girls in layers of patterned fabric, tops hats and ritualistic sacrifices.

I see chaos yet coherence. I see the reimbodiment of imagination, um, I see the truth. All I see is crazy shit. I see dreams of bababies dancing and masks bursting into dust. That’s where I saw the aliens.

I see a lot of new art and young people. I like the photos of the girl with the tape on the mouth. The Barbie legs are very unusual it makes me want to do something like it. There are certain social aspects in the pieces.

“What do you see?”

Oh Viv, amazing, it’s like Andy Kaufman. Off the record, both the best and worst childhood at the same time.

Deep Tanks 8 to 9 pm ”What do you see?”

I see um, white radiator grids and dead fish.

I see um, primary colors .

I see beautiful butterflies emerging out of their coccoons, I see lots of Rorsach Ink blots, and lots of happy people.

I see artists working, forests, men, sorry somebodies, my Mom, responding to stress.

Over there, someone. I don’t know them. Should I know them? Hmmmmm

2010 Marginal Arts Festival in Roanoke Virginia. And Day de Dada was there. Along with the Art Nurses, Big Liar (was he there? are you sure ?) and the Art Grant Fairy. The 3 Art Nurses cured a few art works at the Taubman Museum, soothed a few artistic bruised egos and were crowned Queens of the Festival along with King Ralph. Dada Dollars were freely dispensed to the worthy and the unworthy.

Stuffed animals were unstuffed and restuffed into new and twisted forms, bubble wrap exploded and pianos were “re-tuned.” Art was paraded and reconstructed with puppets, drums and accordions.

And an Art Rat finally, bravely ran to the ground but (I’m sure) will rise again next year. We wondered - Can ladders reach that high? or just chairs at the Labyrinth…. and can that many events happen at the same time ? Yes, they can.

First - there is Fluxus Piano Push

Then – there is Fluxus Piano Music

On Saturday, the crew at the “Flux Mazz” gave out bread freely and applied it vigorously with the loaf and one piece at a time. Zierle and Carter collected what we treasure and set it free. A little rain did not dampen spirits – the Marginal Arts Festival will ride again!

Fluxfest Chicago Art Nurse Creative Pulse Report:

Tell us about any scars caused by art:

Sgraffito

Back hurts from doing college art projects.

All scars & changes lie beneath the surface.

I painted a punk rock album in a high school art class. The teacher didn’t like it. I though it was pretty good fo my first & only artistic atempt. I have never attemtped to paint again.

I carve in a checker box sort of thing into my wrist. It looks a lot like this even though it looks crazy it looks like a checker print.

Once I sew my scars though it heals: felt inside. I wasn’t so I sew to try to use the pain as art.

I have more hair and my voice has gotten lower. When I climb the rope in gym class, I feel funny.

Descending the staircase, fell into the arms of a waiting venus. Got all wet.

amputation of 6th (vestigal) finger.

Paper cuts

I was making a snow flake and I cut myself with my scissors.

In the palm of my hand from scraping a palette with a razor blade.

Tell us something we need to know about your creative brain.

It operates the best while working on a given project and adapting that project to my own.

Works best when presented with a problem to solve.

I’m a jerk !

I can’t really put it into words.

I am creative.

I am a teacher.

Art has caused me to smile for the whole day.

I compartmentalize the way I approach art.

I draw from what’s around me.

Mental Scars.

It is always in motion.

I play piano, violin, viola and bass.

I can make a game to play within 5 mins.

It is always in motion. It is always in motion.

It is very wide and undiscovered yet. Unfortunately !

I’m nervous when it is unnecessary. Sometimes just accepting that leads to greater creativity.

What body part do you use the most when you are being creative ?

Eyes – straining to see the light trying to know want invincible eyes.

My arms and it feels good.

Stomach – tight flutter, excited, twisty, tight

My heart, and it feels freeing. My heart feels bigger and more open. When I collaborate it’s like a bunch of hearts beating together.

My stomach. It vibrates. It hurts a lot but it never hurts when I’m beeing creative. I love feeling my stomach living, talking.

Right Hand – Relaxing. I can tune out everything around me, and focus on a single task.

I use my hands, I constantly have to feel everything I am doing. I can feel the emotion flow through it. It’s incredible.

wrist – liberating & sometimes painful.

Hands warm.

Head big.

My eyes; it makes my head hurt.

My brain feels like it has eyes, ears, and feet when I am being creative.

My brain because I think of ideas. That’s pretty much where all my art comes from, my mind. I use my hands and eyes to execute those ideas but they originate in my brain.

The pencil bit me.

Feet * not bad today.

Eyes. They feel strained. I need to see what I am making / creating in order to actually produce something.

My head

How does creativity affect your body?

It puts holes in it and metal things in the holes.

Positively

Infectiously & with rage and intimate tenderness.

Sometimes it makes me cry and my head aches. Sometimes it makes me feel egotistical. Sometimes it floods my body with a feeling of excitement. It can be confusing.

I feel like writing poetry.

Whenever I feel down or sick expressing my creativity releases a great feeling through my body.

I feel part of a bigger world. My body is satisfied.

It gives me energy. It is what I live in.

Go Liberation movements. Tweet On!

It makes me happy

My hat has attached to my head.

Makes me ache, makes me tired, makes me long for more.

The “Glow” Art Party included performances and installations on every floor of the Staten Island Museum. Partygoers were able to greet a gorilla, find out their net worth as a walking talking art piece, choose a pat down or a hug, watch interactive projections on the wall, meet a Dragonfly and sample a special dada brew. Psychoanalysts were on hand to turn deepest dreams and desires into poetry. Installations included sculptures of fantastical animals, the shifting lights of Clowntrodden, black and white figures and florescent rocks. Even the plastic cups used at the celebration turned into a family of walking sculptures. All together over 20 artists participated and helped to create a dada filled evening with a willing audience and a museum that knows how to throw a party.
