LUMEN8 is an exhibition celebrating the past seven years of Staten Island Arts’s LUMEN Festival. Co-curated by Monica Valenzuela and Raul Barquet, this exhibit will feature video, sound art, performance art, and ephemera from past festival participants and honor the artistic genres that the festival highlights.

LUMEN8 pays homage to this annual festival, pulling select work from the past seven years that we’ve loved alongside single-channel video works submitted to Staten Island Arts through an open call.

“Day de Dada does Aesop”

Day de Dada Performance Art Collective creates video reenactments of Aesop’s Fables.  Audience members are invited to reenact the story of the “Ant and the Grasshopper” with props and costumes supplied, no acting experience necessary!

The Ant and the Grasshopper

IN a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”
“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and recommend you to do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; “we have got plenty of food at present.” But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food, and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew:
“IT IS BEST TO PREPARE FOR THE DAYS OF NECESSITY.”

Day de Dada as the Art by the Ferry Fairies ask “What Inspires You ?” at Art by the Ferry 2016 sponsored by the Staten Island Creative Community (SICC)

Day de Dada facilitated the Staten Island observance of the “How to draw a bunny” facebook internet project, which included a live performance at Rhumfest in Kokomo Indiana on July 30, 2016 to celebrate the life of Ray Johnson a mail artist who used a bunny icon in much of his work. Many people contributed their version of bunnies to a community drawing.
